Fingerprints
The Different Types:
ARCHES
WHORLS
LOOPS
There are two different types of loops, and they describe which way the loop goes. The first type of loop is an ulnar loop which means that the loop goes away from the body. So if this print was on a right hand, it would be an ulnar loop. If it was on a left hand, it would be a radial loop because radial loops go towards the body.Loops are the only type of fingerprint whose classification changes based on the hand it is on.

Minute Characteristics
Lifting Prints
DUSTING
Depending on the type of surface a fingerprint is on, forensic scientist will use a different type of fingerprint powder.
When using either of these types of powder, you take a small amount of it and apply it to the surface using a fingerprint brush (for magnetic powder, you use a magnetic brush). With the regular powder, next gently blow away any extra powder, and with the magnetic powder, gently pick up the extra with the brush. Once your print is visible, take a clear piece of tape and carefully smooth it evenly over the print. Finally, remove the tape and observe your (hopefully) clear print! |
OTHER METHODS OF LIFTING PRINTS
Silver Nitrate
|
The chemical silver nitrate can be used to reveal latent prints. It was the first method used to reveal latent prints, but not it is only used as a last-resort method because it can be destructive to the material the print is on. To use silver nitrate, put it on the surface that the print is on and expose it to sunlight until you see a brown/black print. |
Iodine Fuming
Ninhydrin
Superglue Fuming
This method works best on aluminum, plastic, and other semi-porous, shiny surfaces. A surface with latent fingerprints is put in a chamber along with a container filled with superglue, the container is gently heated so the superglue becomes a gas. The fingerprints that are revealed are an off-white colour.
